Achieve Smooth, Professional Leather Edges with Tokonole

Tokonole is the industry-leading Japanese leather burnishing gum, trusted by leatherworkers around the world for creating smooth, glossy edges and beautifully finished flesh sides. Manufactured in Japan, Tokonole is a water-based burnishing compound that makes edge finishing faster, cleaner and more consistent than using water or wax alone.

Suitable for both vegetable-tanned and chrome-tanned leather, Tokonole helps compress leather fibres to produce durable, polished edges with a professional appearance. It can also be used to smooth and seal the flesh side of leather, giving projects a refined finish without adding excessive stiffness or shine.

Whether you’re making wallets, belts, handbags, watch straps or other fine leather goods, Tokonole is one of the most effective edge finishing products available.

How to Use Tokonole

  1. Prepare the edge by trimming cleanly and sanding with fine grade paper until smooth.
  2. Apply a small amount of Tokonole to the edge or flesh side using a finger, cloth, sponge or edge applicator.
  3. Burnish using a wooden slicker tool, canvas cloth, glass burnisher or powered burnishing wheel.
  4. Continue at speed until the fibres are compressed and a smooth, polished finish is achieved.
  5. Repeat if required for an even higher gloss or smoother finish.

Only a small amount is needed, making each pot exceptionally economical.

Edge Burnishing vs Edge Paint

Tokonole is designed to burnish leather rather than coat it. Instead of creating a painted layer on the edge, it compresses and smooths the natural leather fibres, producing a clean, durable finish that showcases the character of the leather.

This makes Tokonole particularly popular for vegetable-tanned leather, where many makers prefer the natural appearance of a burnished edge. It can also be used before applying wax for an even richer finish.

If you’re working with chrome-tanned leather or projects that require a coloured, uniform edge, an edge paint may be a more suitable option.

Why Leatherworkers Choose Tokonole

Tokonole has earned its reputation as one of the finest leather edge finishing compounds available. Its smooth consistency, excellent fibre control and reliable results make it a staple on workbenches ranging from hobby makers to professional workshops.

Compared with using water alone, Tokonole provides greater lubrication during burnishing, helps keep fibres compact, and produces longer-lasting, smoother edges with less effort. It also leaves the flesh side of leather feeling cleaner and more refined, making it ideal for premium leather goods where every detail matters.

For anyone looking to achieve beautifully finished leather edges with minimal effort, Tokonole remains the benchmark for professional leather burnishing.
