Which Needle Size Should I Choose?

The Size 004 needles are recommended for general leathercraft projects (including wallets, watch straps, belts & bags). Please note these are for use with fine to medium thickness thread (0.35 mm - 0.55 mm). Thicker thread will not fit through the eye. The needles measure 48 mm in length.

For fine or heavy duty needles, and if you are using thicker thread (0.65 mm or above) please refer to the guidance below:

  • Size 001 needles - Recommended for belts, bags & saddlery, for use with medium thickness thread (0.55mm - 0.65 mm). Measure 54 mm in length.

  • Size 002-003 needles - Recommended for belts, wallets & bags needing heavier duty seams, for use with medium thickness thread (0.55mm - 0.65 mm). Measure 54 mm in length.

  • Size 1/0 needles - Heavy duty needles recommended for bags & heavy leather projects, for use with heavy waxed thread 0.85 mm thick or above. Measure 57.5 mm in length.

  • Size 2/0 needles - Heavy duty needles recommended for saddlery & heavy leather projects, for use with very heavy waxed thread 1.0 mm thick or above. Measure 59.5 mm in length.

  • Size 3/0 needles - Heavy duty needles recommended for saddlery & heavy leather projects, for use with very heavy waxed thread 1.0 mm or above. Measure 61.5 mm in length.
