How to Use a Diamond Stitching Awl
A diamond stitching awl is an essential leathercraft tool used to create clean, angled stitching holes for strong and attractive hand-sewn seams. The diamond-shaped blade cuts through the leather fibres cleanly, helping to produce the traditional slanted stitch appearance associated with high-quality leatherwork.
Here is a brief guide for using the diamond stitching awl when pre-piercing holes. Refer to our guide on how to saddle stitch leather for more details.
Step 1: Mark Your Stitch Line
Use wing dividers, a stitching groover, or a crease line to mark where your stitches will run. This helps ensure a straight and professional finish.
Step 2: Mark the Hole Positions
Use a pricking iron or stitching chisel to mark the spacing of your stitches. For thicker leather, these tools may only create guide marks rather than fully piercing the material.
Alternatively, if you are going to pre-punch holes by hand using the awl alone (without stitching punches), mark the guides for the stitching holes with a hand stitch spacer tool. Please note: this method is recommended for leather under 3 mm thick only.
Step 3: Position the Awl Correctly
Hold the diamond blade so that it follows the direction of the stitch line. Maintaining a consistent blade orientation will ensure even stitching and a neat slanted appearance.
Step 4: Pierce the Leather
Push the awl through the leather at each marked position with your hand onto a cork board base using firm, controlled pressure. Take care to keep the awl straight and aligned throughout the process.
Step 5: Stitch the Seam
Once the holes have been created, use two needles and waxed thread to saddle stitch the seam. The diamond-shaped holes allow the thread to sit neatly within the leather, creating a durable and professional-looking finish.
Tips for Best Results
- Keep the awl blade sharp and polished for easier penetration.
- Push through by hand only, never use a mallet as this will cause blade breakages.
- Maintain a consistent angle when piercing each hole. Avoid wiggling through!
- Practise on scrap leather before working on a finished project.
