Copper Rivets and Burrs - Heavy Weight

The Copper Rivets and Burrs are quality and heavy weight leather fastenings. These solid copper rivets have a 9 mm or 12 mm diameter cap, with the option of a 12 mm, 20 mm, or 25 mm post length. They are available in packs of 10 or 50.

The post is 3.2 mm diameter (1/8 inch) so we recommend using a 3 mm hole punch to make the hole for insertion.

Recommended for use with the rivet and burr setter tools.

Benefits include:

  • Extremely strong fastening
  • Ideal for high-stress leather applications
  • Traditional solid brass construction
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Long service life
  • Develops an attractive natural patina
  • Suitable for repairs and new leatherwork

When strength matters, rivets and burrs remain the industry standard.

Why Choose Rivets & Burrs

In leathercraft, a rivet is a permanent fastener that joins two pieces of leather, while a burr is a washer or cap that is used with the rivet to secure it. The rivet has a post and a head, and the burr has a hollow hole that fits over the post.

When installed, a burr is flattened or compressed onto the post of the rivet to hold the pieces of leather together permanently.

Our Rivets & Burrs are the traditional fastening of choice for leatherworkers who demand exceptional strength and long-lasting performance. Commonly used in saddlery, harness making, belts, dog collars and heavy leather goods, rivet and burr sets create a permanent mechanical fastening that becomes stronger as it is correctly peened over.

Favoured by professional leatherworkers for generations, copper rivets and burrs provide unrivalled durability while developing a rich patina that complements quality leather over time.

Whether you’re repairing tack, crafting work belts or building hard-wearing leather goods from scratch, rivets and burrs offer a fastening you can trust.

Perfect for Heavy Leather Projects

Rivets and burrs are ideal for projects where stitching alone may not withstand repeated stress.

Popular applications include:

  • Saddlery
  • Harness making
  • Work belts
  • Tool belts
  • Dog collars and leads
  • Horse tack
  • Knife sheaths
  • Axe masks
  • Heavy-duty straps
  • Leather repairs
  • Utility and outdoor equipment

Many professional leatherworkers use rivets and burrs to reinforce stitched seams, handles and strap attachments for maximum durability.

Selecting the Correct Size

Choosing the correct rivet length is essential for achieving a secure fit. The rivet should extend beyond the burr by a small amount (1.5 to 2 times the leather stack), allowing the excess shank to be trimmed before peening.

If you’re unsure which size is best, our team is always happy to help.

Installing Rivets & Burrs

For the strongest results, rivets and burrs should be installed using the appropriate setting tools.

The basic installation process is:

  1. Punch a clean hole through the leather.
  2. Insert the rivet through the material.
  3. Fit the burr firmly onto the rivet shank.
  4. Trim the excess rivet length.
  5. Peen the rivet to form a permanent head.

Correct installation produces one of the strongest mechanical fastenings available for leathercraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are rivets and burrs used for?

Rivets and burrs are permanent fasteners used to securely join thick or high-stress leather components. They are commonly used in saddlery, harness work, belts, dog collars and heavy-duty leather goods.

Are rivets & burrs stronger than double cap rivets?

Generally, yes. Properly installed copper or brass rivets and burrs provide greater mechanical strength, making them the preferred choice for applications subject to heavy loads or repeated stress.

Can rivets and burrs be removed?

They are designed as permanent fasteners. While they can be removed by cutting or drilling, they cannot be reused once installed.

Do copper rivets rust?

No. Copper does not rust like steel. Instead, it develops a natural protective patina that helps resist corrosion and gives leather goods a traditional appearance.
