How to Use

Using a belt end punch is a straightforward way to achieve a clean and consistent strap end.

1. Prepare your leather

Cut your belt or strap to the required length and width.

For best results, make sure the leather is flat and the end you're punching is clean and square.

2. Mark the centre

Identify the centre of the belt or strap and align the centre of the punch with it.

Accurate positioning is important because it determines whether the finished end will be symmetrical.

3. Position the punch

Place the Ivan belt end punch over the end of the leather.

Make sure the punch is sitting squarely and that the cutting edge is positioned exactly where you want the finished end to begin.

For a 50mm belt, take particular care to centre the punch across the full width of the strap.

4. Use a suitable punching surface

Place the leather on a proper end-grain or poly cutting board designed for use with leather punches.

Avoid punching directly onto hard surfaces such as metal, stone or glass, as these can damage the cutting edge.

5. Strike the punch

Using a suitable leathercraft mallet or maul, strike the top of the punch with controlled, even blows.

Depending on the thickness and type of leather, several strikes may be required to cut completely through the material.

Keep the punch vertical while striking to produce an even cut.

6. Remove the punch and inspect the cut

Once the cut is complete, carefully lift the punch away from the leather and remove the waste piece.

You should now have a clean, symmetrical shaped end ready for further finishing.

If necessary, lightly refine the edge using your normal leather edge-finishing process.

Tips for Using a Belt End Punch

For the cleanest results when using the Ivan belt end punch:

  • Centre the punch carefully before striking.
  • Use a sharp, properly maintained punch for the cleanest cut.
  • Always work on a suitable leather punching board.
  • Use controlled strikes rather than excessive force.
  • Make sure the leather is lying completely flat.
  • For thicker leather, allow enough force and repeated strikes to cut fully through the material rather than forcing the punch at an angle.
  • Keep the punch perpendicular to the leather throughout the cut.

Available Sizes

Choose the size that best matches the width of the belt or strap you are working with.

20 mm: Narrow straps and smaller leather goods

25 mm: Medium-width straps and belts

30 mm: Wider belts and straps

35 mm: Wide belts and substantial leather straps

The size refers to the width of the punch and the resulting English Point end. For the most balanced appearance, choose a punch appropriate to the width of your strap.

Why Choose an English Point Strap End Punch?

A dedicated strap end punch makes it much easier to achieve a clean and repeatable finish on leather belts and straps. Instead of marking out and cutting an English Point by hand, the punch creates the shape quickly and consistently.

The sharp, tempered steel cutting edge is designed to make clean cuts through leather, while the rigid construction helps the punch remain stable when striking.

An English Point gives the end of a belt or strap a distinctive appearance compared with a simple square or rounded end, making it particularly suitable for traditional and decorative leatherwork.

For anyone making belts or straps regularly, a dedicated English Point punch can save time while helping maintain a consistent finish across multiple projects.
