Hickory Mallet for Leathercraft

The CS Osborne Hickory Mallet for Leathercraft, made from solid and durable Hickory wood, for tasks such as hammering punch holes in leathercraft projects. A heavyweight hammer for punching cleanly.

The mallet measures 31.5 cm length, 5.5 cm head diameter, 13 cm head length.

A hickory mallet is used in leathercraft primarily because it strikes the perfect balance between being hard enough to drive tools effectively, yet soft enough to prevent damage to expensive tools, such as punches and chisels. Here is why hickory is preferred in leatherworkinG:
  • Protects Tools: Unlike metal hammers, which can ruin tools (making them "mushroom" or bend), a dense hardwood like hickory absorbs the shock of the hit, sparing the life of your chisels, stamps, and punches.
  • Ideal Density and Weight: Hickory is incredibly dense and durable, providing enough weight to drive tools through thick leather with a solid hit, while still offering a "gentle" feel.
  • Excellent Shock Absorption: Hickory is a traditional wood for handles and heads because it absorbs vibration well, reducing strain on the wrist during long, repetitive work sessions.
  • Balance and Control: Many leather mallets are round, which allows for better balance, ensuring that the tool turns in your hand without causing deflection during strikes.
