How to Use French Pricking Irons

French pricking irons are used to mark or create evenly spaced stitching holes for traditional saddle stitching. Begin by marking your stitch line with a wing divider or creaser, then position the pricking iron along the line and strike it firmly with a suitable mallet.

For straight sections, use the 5 and 8-tooth irons to establish consistent spacing quickly. When approaching corners, curves, or tighter areas, switch to the 2-prong iron for greater control and accuracy. To maintain perfect stitch spacing, overlap the first tooth of the iron in the last hole created before making the next strike.
