How to Use a Corner Punch

1. Mark the Corner

Position your leather and mark where the corner should be rounded. Make sure the leather is cut to the required dimensions before punching.

2. Position the Punch

Place the leather on a suitable leather punching mat or poundo board.

Position the corner punch over the corner, ensuring that the punch is correctly aligned with the edges of the leather. Take care to position all corners consistently if you are working on a piece with multiple rounded corners.

3. Strike the Punch

Hold the punch securely and strike the top with a suitable leatherworking mallet or maul.

Use firm, controlled blows. Depending on the thickness and density of the leather, more than one strike may be required.

4. Remove the Waste

Lift the punch and remove the cut piece of leather. You should be left with a clean, smooth and consistent rounded corner.

5. Finish the Edge

Once the corner has been cut, bevel, sand and burnish the edge as required. This will help produce a smooth, professional finish.

Tips for Best Results

  • Make sure the leather is positioned securely before striking.
  • Align the punch carefully with the edges of the leather.
  • Use the same positioning technique for each corner to achieve consistent results.
  • Keep the punch vertical when striking.
  • Use a suitable leatherworking mallet or maul.
  • Always use an appropriate punching mat or poundo board.
  • Avoid striking the punch against hard metal, stone or other unsuitable surfaces.
  • Test the punch on scrap leather before working on your finished piece.
  • Keep the cutting edge protected when the punch is not in use.

Important: The cutting edge is extremely sharp. Handle the punch carefully and store it safely when not in use. Do not strike the punch against hard surfaces, as this can damage or blunt the cutting edge.

Available Sizes

1 cm – 5 mm Radius

The 1 cm corner punch creates a 5 mm radius and is well suited to smaller leather goods and projects where a relatively tight corner is required.

2 cm – 10 mm Radius

The 2 cm corner punch creates a 10 mm radius, giving a larger and softer curve. This is particularly useful for wider straps, belts and larger leather panels.

Why Choose a Kyoshin Elle Corner Punch?

Cutting a clean radius by hand can be surprisingly difficult. Even a small variation from one corner to another can be noticeable, particularly on wallets, belts and other carefully finished leather goods.

A dedicated corner punch takes the guesswork out of the process. Once positioned correctly, it produces a precise and repeatable radius, helping you achieve matching corners across a project.

The two available sizes also give you the flexibility to choose between a tighter, more subtle curve and a larger, softer rounded corner.

As with other specialist leatherworking tools from Kyoshin Elle, these punches are made in Japan for precision leathercraft work.
