A stitching wheel is used to mark the positions of your stitching holes before punching or piercing the leather.
1. Mark your stitch line
First, establish where you want your stitches to sit. Use a wing divider, stitching groover or suitable leathercraft marking tool to create a consistent line parallel to the edge of the leather.
2. Choose your stitch spacing
Select the Craft Sha wheel with the spacing you need: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm or 6mm.
The right spacing depends on the size and style of your project. Smaller spacing generally suits fine leather goods, while wider spacing can work well on larger or heavier items.
3. Roll the wheel along the stitch line
Place the first point of the wheel on your stitch line and roll the wheel along the leather while maintaining steady pressure.
The wheel creates a series of evenly spaced impressions that show you exactly where your stitching holes should be made.
For the most consistent results, keep the wheel moving smoothly and follow the stitch line rather than repeatedly stopping and starting.
4. Punch or pierce the holes
Once the stitch positions have been marked, use your preferred leathercraft stitching chisels, pricking irons, awl or other hole-punching tool to create the holes.
The marks from the stitching wheel provide a useful guide, helping you maintain consistent spacing along straight sections and around curves.
5. Stitch your project
With the holes prepared, you can proceed with your chosen hand-stitching method, such as traditional saddle stitching.
