Why Choose Double Cap Rivets

Our Double Cap Rivets are the ideal choice for leatherworkers looking for a strong, attractive and corrosion-resistant fastening.

Designed with a finished cap on both sides, double cap rivets create a clean, professional appearance from every angle. They’re a popular choice for belts, bags, wallets, straps, dog collars and countless other leathercraft projects where both sides of the leather are visible.

Whether you’re a hobbyist, professional maker or small leather goods business, these leather rivets deliver dependable performance with a timeless finish.

Ideal for...

Double cap rivets are suitable for a wide range of leatherworking applications, including:

  • Leather belts
  • Wallets
  • Handbags and satchels
  • Dog collars and leads
  • Key fobs
  • Watch straps
  • Notebook covers
  • Leather aprons
  • Cases and organisers
  • Decorative strap fixings

They are especially useful where stitching alone may not provide sufficient strength or where additional reinforcement is required.

How to Size a Rivet

Selecting the correct rivet is essential for achieving a secure, professional result. Our double cap rivets are available in a range of cap diameters and post lengths to suit different leather thicknesses.

When choosing a rivet, consider the combined thickness of the leather layers being joined. The post should be slightly longer than the total leather thickness (1.5 to 2 times) to allow the rivet to set correctly without becoming loose.

How to Set a Rivet

These rivets are designed to be installed using a compatible rivet setter and anvil, producing a neat, consistent finish with minimal effort.

For best results:

Select the appropriate size rivet: Choose the post length according to your leather thickness (1.5 to 2 times the leather stack thickness).

Punch a hole: Use a rotary punch or hole punch sized correctly for your rivet post. The hole diameter should match the post diameter or be slightly larger (0.5 mm) for a snug fit.

Position the rivet: Place the bottom rivet piece (post) up through your leather layers from the back.

Add the cap: Push the second cap down onto the protruding post.

Set on anvil: Rest the lower head on the concave base of your anvil.

Hammer secure: Place the concave end of your rivet setter over the cap and strike firmly with a mallet 2 to 3 times.

Extra Tips:

Use the right tool: Use a dedicated rivet setting tool.

Practice makes perfect: Test on an offcut before fitting to your finished project.

Correct installation ensures maximum holding strength and helps maintain the attractive double cap finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Metal leather rivets on a white background

What’s the advantage of a double cap rivet?

Double cap rivets feature a finished head on both sides of the leather, creating a clean, professional appearance wherever the reverse side is visible.

Are these rivets suitable for outdoor use?

For outdoor use choose solid brass. Solid brass naturally resists rust and corrosion, making it an excellent choice for leather goods that are exposed to the elements, including dog collars, straps and equestrian equipment.

Can I reuse a rivet?

No. Leather rivets are designed as permanent fasteners. Once installed, they should be removed and replaced if the leatherwork needs to be disassembled. For removable studs, choose Chicago Screws.
