How to Use a Thor Hide Hammer for Leatherwork
The Thor Hide Hammer is designed for controlled, concentrated striking rather than general-purpose heavy hammering.
Step 1 – Prepare Your Work Surface
Place your leatherwork on a clean, stable and suitably supported surface.
For delicate leather, use an appropriate protective layer or supporting material to reduce the risk of unwanted impressions.
Step 2 – Select the Appropriate Hammer Size
Choose Size 2 for greater handling control and moderately heavy striking tasks.
Select Size 3 when additional striking weight is required.
Always consider the thickness, firmness and surface finish of the leather before applying force.
Step 3 – Position the Hide Face
Hold the wooden handle securely and position one of the hide faces squarely over the area to be struck.
Ensure the face makes even contact with the surface.
Step 4 – Apply Controlled Blows
Use light, deliberate strikes initially, increasing the force only when necessary.
The malleable iron head provides substantial striking weight, so excessive force is rarely desirable when working directly on leather.
Step 5 – Inspect the Finished Surface
Check the leather or workpiece after each series of strikes.
Avoid repeatedly hammering the same area if the material begins to compress, stretch or develop unwanted marks.
Top tip: The Thor Hide Hammer is considerably heavier than many traditional leathercraft mallets. When working on delicate leather goods, always test the striking force on an offcut first.
