How to Use the Thor Super Plastic Mallet for Leathercraft
The Thor Super Plastic Mallet is designed for straightforward, controlled striking and can be used with a wide range of compatible leatherworking tools.
Step 1 – Prepare Your Work Surface
Place your leather on a firm, stable workbench with a suitable cutting mat or punching board underneath.
A proper punching surface helps protect your tools and supports the leather for clean, accurate cutting.
Step 2 – Position Your Leatherworking Tool
Place your hole punch, stitching chisel or other suitable leatherworking tool in the required position.
Hold the tool upright and ensure the cutting edge is correctly aligned with your intended hole or stitch line.
Step 3 – Strike with Controlled Force
Grip the wooden handle firmly and bring the plastic mallet head down squarely onto the striking end of the tool.
Use a controlled, deliberate strike rather than excessive force.
The mallet's 480g weight helps deliver effective striking force, while the 60mm head provides a generous striking surface.
Step 4 – Check Your Results
Check that the punch or chisel has cut cleanly through the leather.
If necessary, apply another controlled strike, keeping the tool properly aligned.
For thicker or firmer leather, additional force may be required depending on the tool and material.
Top tip: Always use a suitable punching surface and ensure your leatherworking tools are designed to be struck with a mallet. Avoid striking sharp edges or unsuitable metal surfaces directly, as these can damage the plastic head.
