How to Use

For Leather Edges

1. Prepare the edge

Cut the leather cleanly and complete any edge bevelling, sanding or other preparation required for your project.

2. Apply Toko Pro

Apply a small amount of Toko Pro evenly along the leather edge. A little product is usually sufficient, so avoid unnecessarily saturating the leather.

3. Burnish the edge

Work the edge using a wooden burnisher, slicker, canvas or another suitable leather burnishing tool.

Use controlled pressure and friction to smooth the leather fibres.

4. Inspect the finish

Continue working the edge until you achieve the desired level of smoothness.

Additional edge preparation or another light application may be useful depending on the leather and the finish you are trying to achieve.

Using Toko Pro on the Flesh Side

Apply a thin, even layer to the flesh side of the leather.

Use a suitable slicker or burnishing tool to work the product into the surface, laying the loose fibres down in a consistent direction.

Allow the leather to dry before assessing the final finish.

This technique is particularly useful for belts, straps and other unlined leather goods where the reverse of the leather will remain visible.

Why Choose Toko Pro Burnishing Gum?

Smooth, Refined Leather Edges

Toko Pro is designed to help control and flatten the exposed fibres along a cut leather edge.

Apply a small amount before working the edge with your preferred burnishing tool. The combination of product, pressure and friction helps produce a smoother and more finished appearance.

It is ideal for projects such as belts, wallets, straps, bags, cases and other leather goods where clean edges form an important part of the finished piece.

Finish the Flesh Side of Leather

Toko Pro isn't limited to edges.

It can also be spread over the flesh side – the reverse or suede-like side – of the leather and worked with a suitable slicker or burnishing tool.

This helps lay down loose or raised fibres, creating a cleaner and smoother reverse surface. This can be particularly useful where the flesh side remains visible on the finished item.

Suitable for Different Types of Leather

One of the advantages of Toko Pro is its versatility.

It can be used on:

  • Vegetable-tanned leather
  • Chrome-tanned leather
  • Combination-tanned leather

The final result will vary according to the particular leather, tannage and surface characteristics, so we recommend testing the product on a small offcut before applying it to your finished project.

For Better Results

The quality of a burnished edge depends on more than the burnishing compound alone.

Start with a clean, accurately cut edge and prepare it appropriately before applying Toko Pro. Depending on the leather and the finish required, this may involve edge bevelling and progressive sanding before burnishing.

Apply Toko Pro sparingly and build the finish gradually rather than applying a heavy layer at once.

As different leathers can respond differently to burnishing, always test your technique on an offcut when working with an unfamiliar leather.
